Indochino pushes retail expension

Friday, February 10, 2017

Indochino retail location. Photo via betakit.com

According to several news sources, Indochino is pushing their retail expansion in 2017. Up to 8 new showrooms will be opened in cities across the US and Canada. Retail locations are a big part of Indochino's growth strategy. Many customers prefer the in-store experience, the ability to touch fabrics and to receive help from Indochino's style guides.
“This year, we’re almost doubling our showroom network as we focus on significantly expanding our experiential retail model,” said Drew Green, the CEO of Indochino. “As we continue to bring our unique showrooms to more cities and introduce custom clothing as an attractive and affordable alternative to ready-to-wear, we’re beginning to change the way a generation of men suit up, and that’s incredibly exciting to see.” (Source: betakit.com)

Indochino Suit Review - Autumn Indigo Herringbone Windowpane Suit

Sunday, August 16, 2015

Sometimes I look back at this blog and I'm surprised it's been going on for so long. I also realise I used to post a lot more reviews which should be the main content on here and I gotta admit, I didn't publish as much as I would have liked to. I didn't stop wearing Indochino suits at all, but I've had less and less time to write about it. Let's see if I can break the spell.

There is one specific Indochino suit that I've been wearing a lot before the weather got too hot. The Luxury Autumn Indigo Herringbone Windowpane suit. What a name, right? It's unfortunately not available anymore, it was part of the Fall 2014 Collection originally. That said, the Fall 20156 Collection has a couple of similar suits available.

I now work for a small internet start-up, not for an established multinational anymore and it's casual wear during the days. I'd be awkward if I showed up in suit and tie every day to be honest - and I enjoy the causal wear e.g. well cut pants and a nice shirt. I know that goes a bit against the "movement" Indochino is promoting: dress up, be fancy. I really wish Indochino had more in store when it comes to casual wear - I remember they did discuss Indochino cardigans and other items a few years back, but that was when Heikal Ghani was still responsible for product and it seems there are no such plans anymore (at least at the moment).
Side notes on Indochino Ties: My experience with Indochino's ties goes back many years. They were always sold as 100% silk and I still got some of their early offerings. If that was indeed silk then, I don't know what it is today, but the material improved enormously. That Slate Floral Tie I have is really made of a very nice material, fells and looks great. The tie isn't available at the moment, but all of the new ones a pretty much of the same quality material.
Anyway, I was at a wedding a while back and finally had a chance to wear that Indigo Indochino suit you see above. I realise most of you are from the US and Canada, so let me just quickly explain how weddings work in most European countries: Everyone wears a different outfit. There are bridesmen and brideswomen, but they don't necessarily wear the same things. Why? I don't know, it's just not something we do and thus there is not a huge market to outfit wedding parties. What you get is a great mix of suits and dresses, especially if different nations are present. The Italians usually stand out, that's for sure. The rest of Europe follows and I can't really say there is any other special nation overall, social status seems to be a major factor influencing how you dress. There are plenty of ill fitting suits to be seen, but luckily we don't have these extremely oversized, box cut suits that I always see in US wedding photography. In any case, I did pretty well with my Indochino suit too.
Side notes on perfumes: I'm very much a "less is more" guy and that certainly is true for perfumes, in my opinion. No one should smell you from 10 meters away and your perfume smell shouldn't linger for 5 minutes after you left a room. I like the solid perfumes that seem to pop up everywhere, a favourite of mine is certainly Alfred Lane.
Alfred Lane solid perfumes: http://alfredlane.com/
Back to the suit: Because of its pattern, I wanted to keep the rest of the outfit simple. I went for a couple of different shades of blue, actually. I combined the outfit with the Lapis Blue French Oxford Shirt, the Slate Floral Tie and the Indochino Silver Tie Bar. Didn't go for a pocket square this time around, no cufflinks either. Let me tell you about the suit: I've developed an eye for certain details: seams, buttons, button holes, shoulder pads, lining to name just a few. I also have the comparison to older Indochino suits and I can safely tell you: They know what they are doing and they are doing it well. There used to be these stories around of local tailors having to alter Indochino suits and being shocked at the construction method and the materials. These days are gone for good - the product is excellent.

As for other accessories, I kept it simple with a watch brand I had supported on Kickstarter, called Elliot Havok. I got their black watch, The Blackout Havok Watch, and I'm mostly happy with it, especially considering the price of $95. Looks fine, the leather straps could feel more natural for my taste - it says genuine leather, but we all know that doesn't mean much so I'm going to change them to maybe NATO straps. The rest is done really well.

Indochino Suit Review: Suit Customisation Options

Summary:
It very often sounds like usual marketing lingo: We greatly improved our product by using high quality suppliers etc. etc. bla bla bla. The truth is: Indochino really improved product quality over the last couple of years. Yeah sure, they also increased prices, but you can get a simply awesome product for a really good price.

The real key to a well fitting Indochino thing is still the measurements. I like their approach of having more and more brick-and-mortar stores. A trained Indochino employee should be able to get your measurements right and as long as the factory doesn't mess up, your chance for a good fit on the first suit should be much higher. Anyway, will try to update with more pics and details, but wanted to get this review out finally. Thanks for reading and feel free to ask me questions or demand more detailed info.

Indochino Summer 2014 - Cotton Suits and Shirts

Sunday, May 18, 2014

Indochino Summer Collection 2014
Indochino just released the first pieces from their 2014 Summer Collection. As usual, the collection features a number of lighter suits including cotton/wool blends that are perfect for the warmer weather. The lookbook also suggests a number of additional suits and shirts to be released over the coming weeks. There are a couple of suits that look like seersucker at first sight (due to the characteristically striped pattern), but they are actually also a blend of wool and cotton (see photo above).

Prices start at $429 and go up to $749 for the 3-piece premium suits. There are also a number of new cotton shirts in a variety of solid colours and patterns from $119 (didn't spot a lower priced summer shirt).

What's your guys first impression - anything particular that stands out? In need for a nice summer suit here, but not sure yet which one to get.

Indochino 2014 - Challenges Ahead

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

2014 will be an interesting year for Indochino - we have yet to see their first collection of the year, but there are already plenty of topics to cover. I've heard a few rumours about additional taxes on Indochino suits for the last few weeks and decided to look into the topic more closely. The whole taxation part is tricky, but one thing becomes clear: Indochino has to charge customers with additional tax in at least some of the US states where they previously held one of their Traveling Tailor events. Customers in California are hit with a 8.5% sales tax according to Rick Squires on Twitter and customers from NY also mentioned having to pay additional tax. The tax amount is calculated automatically at checkout, I didn't see any tax being calculated for NY, but changing the address to CA showed a tax of approximately 6%. Premium suits suits thus now cost around $740 for Californian customers, up $50 from the $699 shown on the website.

Indochino Review - The Essential Charcoal Suit

Friday, November 22, 2013

I had planned on publishing this Indochino Essential Charcoal Suit Review much earlier, but postponed publishing it a couple of times. I thought it may be more interesting to do the review as a video for once, so that's just what I did, with a little help from a friend. It's interesting doing this as compared to a couple of photos. You can control your posture on a photo much better and only on video your realise that your suit doesn't look good in all position. Overall, I'm very happy with the suit. Fabric quality and construction is better than ever and there is no doubt that Indochino has matured greatly as a company. Of course, Charcoal is also a tremendously versatile colour and opens up a lot of possible combinations.

Also check out Soxiety and Mantorii (now owned by InStitchu) who were so kind to provide socks and shoes for the review.

Indochino Essential Charcoal & The Collar Gap

Sunday, October 6, 2013

Indochino Collar Gap
An Indochino Collar Gap - not a very bad one, but noticeable
Suit: Indochino Essential Charcoal

Indochino Collar Gaps - an annoying issue

Collar gaps are a very annoying thing - they happen on a lot of online MTM suits and they are usually not an easy fix - and it can be hard to determine why exactly a collar gap happens. What exactly is a collar gap? The way I use the term here (and that's the generally accepted definition), it is a gap caused between the shirt collar and the suit collar - especially in the back. The suit collar should hug the shirt collar and the suit should drape naturally. Sometimes a collar gap is created when you lift your arms - that's hard to avoid, but there should not be a gap when you just stand naturally.

I had been lucky for a long time with my Indochino suits and escaped the issue. But Indochino collar gaps are an issue for many readers and the topic has been raised in a number of comments. Often, you wont notice it right away. Actually I was really convinced my latest suit - the Indochino Essential Charcoal -fits really fine, until I had a little video clip made and was incredibly annoyed when watching it - my Indochino suit had a collar gap.

Indochino Collar Gaps - what do do

Indochino collar gaps - and more generally, collar gaps on any suit, take a good tailor to fix or even require a remake. A lot of things come into play. Your posture, the way you hold your shoulders being the most important ones. You have to mention these factors on order, but often we don't have a clear idea of our body characteristics. Also, if your body changes e.g. because you start working out it can lead to the same issue. I'm a pretty slim guy, but I've been working out lately and I think that's the reason why I suddenly ran into the issue. I'm determined to go to a tailor within the next few days and hopefully get a better idea of why it happened and how it can be fixed - expect an update and some hopefully helpful insights soon.

In the meanwhile, I'd be happy to hear from anyone who has had to deal with collar gaps before - did you find an easy fix? How did you change your measurements?

Indochino reboots Essential Collection (and increases prices)

Indochino Essential Suits

Indochino has certainly evolved as a brand over the last couple of years and keeps coming up with new collections every other month. This time, Indochino has decided to overhaul their popular Essential Collection, giving their basic suits a well deserved time in the spotlight with new imagery and some nice editorials.

The Essential Suits focus very much on timeless style and don't bother much with fashion trends - and that's exactly what makes them so versatile. You simply cannot go wrong with a 2-button Essential Charcoal suit or the ubiquitous Essential Navy Suit, the Essential Line simply offers those suits every man should own.

So far, so good.

It's a mixed affair with Indochino for many. While the days of 30% deals, Groupon coupons and free shirts sadly seem to be gone for good, increased product quality and a good selection still make prices from $449 (an increase of $70 compared to just a week ago) for a custom suit rather reasonable. Often forgotten, Indochino had introduced a number of significant quality improvements in late 2012 - Bemberg linings, BWF collar felts, Helsa shoulderpads - read more about it here: Thomas Mason fabrics and the impressive development of Indochino.

Indochino's social media channels today are full of disgruntled customers demanding more information on the price hike and want to know what makes the suits different from those just a week ago.

For me, it mainly shows that Indochino is now past the time when only growth mattered and profit was a dream for the future. Investors want to see money and I guess everyone now believes the brand and its customers are ready for it. They are pushing this strategy with full force and hope to get through the initial outcry as quickly and with as little damage as possible.

I'm really interested in hearing what you have to say. What's your opinion on the price point and the quality you get for your money? I have to be very honest here, I expected a slightly bigger reboot. From my perspective, it would have made sense to keep a couple of product quality upgrades to communicate together with the new imagery - it may have softened the effect of the price increase. That said, I personally still think the price point is good enough - there are a a couple of alternatives if you want cheaper.

Suit Review: The Nanotech Storm Indigo Striped Suit

Sunday, February 3, 2013

Indochino Suit Review
The Nanotech Storm Indigo Stripe Suit
There are a couple of points that highlight the evolution of Indochino: upgraded components, Bemberg liners, digital cutting are just a few. However, it's one thing to read about upgraded components and it's a whole different thing to feel the impact these upgrades have on an actual suit. I've plenty of Indochino suits to compare to and it's safe to say that this suit now, is one of the best ones I've ever head.

The Nanotech Storm Indigo Stripe Suit is part of the first Indochino Collection 2013, the controversial Ultimate Tech Collection. The first collection of a year is always something special and people expect Indochino to stay innovative, stylish/fashionable and at the same time affordable, responsive and accommodating. Sometimes you just can't satisfy everyone and I have a feeling that's what happened with the Ultimate Tech Collection. I have written in length about it already, so I won't go into details now. Suffice it to say, I thought there were plenty of good ideas overall but I certainly don't envy the Indochino employee who had to answer to customers on Facebook around launch day.

Back to my suit. It has all the gimmicks of the Tech Collection:
  • Smart Pocket: touch sensitive pocket for smartphones, cable clip, earphone hole. The smartphone pocket is a really useful idea for those who carry their phones in their suit jackets. The earphone hole and the cable clip (it's removable) may be useful for those listening to music and audiobooks on their commute - see photo below on how that looks on the suit.
Indochino Suit Review
  • NanoTech: the fabric is treated with an advanced coating that repels liquids and stains. In contrast to the past Traveling Collection that had a similar fabric, this one really doesn't feel any different and just feels like a great material. I tested the whole thing by spilling water on the suit and indeed, the water doesn't soak in - see photo below.
Indochino Suit Review

  • Storm Flap: Described by Indochino as "stylish way to protect your neck and chest from cold weather", this feature mostly triggered negative feedback within the community. I am honestly not sure if I would wear it. It certainly keeps you warm, but so does a nice Cashmere scarf. I'm currently in Vietnam, so it's 33°C and not really the right climate to test it, so I will just remove it for now. I also feel it adds some bulk to the shoulders and the lapels, doesn't look as tidy with the Storm Flap attached.
Indochino Suit Review

Indochino Suit Review

Aside from the special features, it is most of all just a very well made and very well fitting suit. I specifically like the attention to details, e.g. the buttons don't feature that bold Indochino text on the sides anymore, the buttonholes are really nicely sewn, buttons actually seem like real bull horn, etc.

By the way, the shirt I chose is part of the premium collection and priced at $159. That's definitely not cheap, no doubt about that. It's also a very nice fabric by Cotonificio Albini. Ok, I didn't know the name but I can tell that the fabric is of very high quality and it feels just great. No loose threads, no loose buttons - it's a great fitting shirt made of great material.

The tie is from Indochino as well, it's their Light Gray Wool Tie. I really like the feel of it, a nice contrast to the usual silk ties and a nice one to have for autumn/winter.

Being in Vietnam also gave me the chance to meet with Aron, co-founder of Mantorii. I had another pair of shoes made. I didn't have to pay for those, but Aron suggested I try something more special to showcase what Mantorii can do. I went for a pair of Chili Red Wholecut shoes with blue lining (different lining is available via email request only for the moment) and blue shoe laces. Single leather sole.

Indochino Suit Review
I might slim down the pants a little at the bottom
It's a very bold shoe and an interesting combination with the indigo blue Indochino suit. I don't think I'd wear these at the office, but they are great for special occasions.

Indochino Gift Cards

Thursday, November 4, 2010

Ok, so this is not the great news (a new november collection would be), but at least some sign of activity. Indochino introduces gift cards that can either be sent as e-cards or real physical gift cards. Here is hope our girlfriends or wifes, mothers or grandparents read this as well! If you do, please head over to Indochino and donate a generous gift to us! By the way, this is a bit off topic now, but I am in Thailand currently, so if anyone can recommend a good tailor in Bangkok, Chiang Mai or somewhere around Krabi, please let me know. Would be interesting to compare the quality to Indochino!

Indochino Suit Bag Suggestion

Thursday, September 9, 2010

Suit bags are essential, especially for short term trips where it does not make sense to bring a big suitcase. I usually carry the suit in suit bags separately anyway, to avoid wrinkles. My favorite bag can be folded in half and fixed on the edges with two simple clicks. Furthermore, it includes handles, so you don't have to carry it on the metal part of the hanger.

my favorite suit bag can be folded and includes handles
Up until now I didn't really use my Indochino suit bags (they send one for free with every suit), but for a recent trip I wanted to give them a try. Unfortunately, the 2 bags I have seem to be faulty. As can be seen in the picture below, the end of the zip is not done properly, so you cannot actually close the zip. In fact, the bag becomes completely useless, as it just opens up after a while. Well, you could use it to put a suit in a suitcase, but not to carry one around.

Indochino bag: zip cannot be closed
It'd be great if you could take a quick look at your bags and see if they have the same construction mistake (let me know in the comments). If yes, I'll write Angie a quick email about it - that's something that should be very easy to fix.

Update:
As usual, Angie was very quick to reply and very helpful. Indochino is already looking into the problem and I'm sure they'll fix it soon. Also, I wasn't aware that the Indochino bags can in fact be folded (like my favourite bag), so they are easier to cary around:
"Also, our suit bags are designed to be folded. There should be a pocket, place the hanger through the hole on the opposite end of the pocket side and then fold and put the pocket over the other end and through the hole.  It should be a half circle and say Indochino upright on it." Indochino's thoughts on the Fashion Industry

Monday, September 6, 2010

"To the critics, here's our succinct thought abt the fashion industry."
So, Indochino doesn't agree with GQ et al.? I would have thought they endorse those magazines and the Fashion Industry, being proud to respond to trends quickly with their monthly collections. Or do I not get the message of the photo above?

The Indochino Hedonist Gentlemen Collection

Thursday, September 2, 2010

I'm a bit late this time with the news, my little Greek holiday hideaway experienced an electric blackout, preventing me from checking my emails and writing about the new Indochino Collection and the updated Indochino Website. The functionality/structure of the website remained pretty much the same, but features updated photos of most products, new background images, new fonts and some other changes that I will go more into depth incl. screenshots. My first impression was that everything seems much more fashion forward now, with female models and probably a different photographer.

As mentioned earlier, the big new collection is called "The Hedonist Gentleman Collection".
The Hedonist Gentleman Collection features luxurious velvet and elegant pinstripes, inspired by the hard-working, pleasure seeking 1950's and 60's man. The “Hedonist” updates those classic styles with slimmer silhouettes and colorful customization for added personality and fun.
The biggest surprise of the new collection are probably the 3 velvet (made from cotton) suits (and one blazer), available in 2 browns, velvet and navy.

The Borsalino Brown Velvet Suit

Overall, the suits have broader lapels (compared to the slim lapels of the previous collections) and I'm sure many of you will be happy to see that many suits now have detailed fabric descriptions (thread count, weight, etc.).  Furthermore, the model's suits are now also a bit longer again, more suitable for work environments.

Apart from the velvet suits, the new collection also brings a new Navy fabric and a couple of pinstripe fabrics, like the Mason Grey Suit pictured below. Some of the fabrics are a bit on the heavier side, suitable for winter.
The Mason Grey Suit

But not only are there new products, Indochino also used the opportunity to remove some older products, including the just recently introduced (and controversial) Unibomber Jacket. The low number (3) of outerwear products currently available suggests some more to come with the colder season.

Apart from the new suits, a couple of shirts have been added. Dark fabrics, which I personally dislike, but I assume many people like.

Usually, coupons quickly lose their validity once a new collection gets online, but I did a quick check on some and they mostly still seem to work.

Upcoming Indochino Revolution

Thursday, August 26, 2010

"Indochino is revolutionizing the way men suit up", at least that is the slogan of the new campaing, launched today via the usual newsletter teaser. What do we know about that upcoming revolution? We know that Indochino is backed up by some financially strong investors, who gathered with Indochino's management not too long ago for a board meeting. We do not know too much about the outcome of this meeting, but we know that soon afterwards Indochino started searching for a new employee. Part of the job discription was the rollout of an extensive Facebook campaign. As you all know, Indochino is present both on Twitter and Facebook, but they don't quite use these channels to their full potential yet. Basically, they are limited to broadcasting news, but hardly engage in communication with customers - it is safe to assume that this is about to change.

Another change we can already observe now is the overhaul of the logo (gold instead of black, also reflected on the packaging). Furthermore, it is a first for Indochino to use females in their ads - a casting to find the female part was conducted recently, see the picture below (taken from Heikal Gani's Facebook wall, visible to everyone, so I assume he doesn't mind if this gets reposted here). The website, or more specifically, the measurement pages, were also overhauled lately as covered in an earlier post.

What else do we know? Basically nothing to write home about. The buzz on Twitter is that Indochino is on to something big - if that is a whole new collection or an inproved construction method, sustainable and green suits, we will find out soon and you will read about it here in detail.

Update: the buzz on Twitter suggests the new collection will be called "The Hedonist Gentleman Collection."
